Cultural styles

Five flavours of human, plus a mix

Each style is a feel rather than a real-world nationality, so it slots into any setting. Pick one to match your region, or browse Any.

Northern

Cold-country names of snow, iron and saga, like Bjorn Frostvik, Astrid Greystrand.

Imperial

Stately old-empire names with a Latin ring, like Marcus Valerian, Livia of House Aurelii.

Coastal

Sun-warmed harbour names of the southern shore, like Mira Solenne, Mateo Delmar.

Highland

Rugged hill-country names of clan and glen, like Eilan Brackmoor, Sorcha MacFinlay.

Eastern

Steppe-and-river names from the far east of the map, like Yara Voskaya, Dragan Mirov.

Naming tips

Making a name feel like a person

Match the world

Keep one style across a region so names sound related. A border town might blend two, so try generating both and mixing.

Use register for rank

Set Register to Noble for landed houses and clans, or Rustic and Common for farmers, sailors and townsfolk.

Refine, don't restart

Found a first name you love but the wrong surname? Choose it, hit Refine, lock the first name and shuffle the rest.

Human name generator FAQ

Yes. You can generate unlimited human names for free, with no sign-up. Copy or save any you like and use them however you want.
Absolutely. The names suit human player characters and NPCs in D&D 5e, Pathfinder and most fantasy and historical RPGs. Pick a cultural style, generate, and drop your favourite onto the character sheet.
Each style is a flavour, not a real-world nationality. Northern leans cold and saga-like, Imperial sounds old-empire and Latin, Coastal is warm and harbour-side, Highland is rugged clan country, and Eastern draws on steppe and river. Leave it on Any for a mix, or pick one to match your setting.
Open Options and set Gender to Masculine or Feminine. Leaving it on Neutral gives a mix of both. First names are drawn from the matching pool for the style you chose.
Register changes the kind of surname you get. Common gives plain family names, Noble adds houses, clans and holdings such as 'of House Valerian', Rustic leans on land and trade, and Archaic uses older forms like patronymics. Leave it on Any for a spread.
Surnames are included by default. Turn them off in Options for first names only, or use Refine on a chosen name to swap just the surname while keeping the first name.
Yes, for stories, comics, video games, streams and other creative projects. Generated names are not trademarked here, but for a major commercial title it is sensible to do a quick search to make sure your chosen name is not already strongly associated with something else.
No. Each batch is checked against the names you have already seen this visit, so you can generate again and again without repeats. Use Previous to step back to an earlier batch.
